“This is one of the best shows I’ve ever been involved in,” an excited Warren said on his official website.

“The card has got loads of stories and some real depth and is exactly what a PPV event should be. We’ve got eight champions, or former, champions in action as well as some youngsters who are going to be knocking on the door for titles in the near future.”

The main support for the two headlining fights come from Britain’s sole gold medalist at the World Amateur Championships (2007 in Chicago), Frankie Gavin (9-0-0, 8ko), who has a style reminiscent of Britain’s only undefeated world champion Joe Calzaghe. Gavin, for the first time in his career, is scheduled in a 12 round contest against Young Mutley (22-2-0, 12ko) – a former British welterweight belt holder.

Billy Joe Saunders who, along with Gavin and DeGale, turned professional in 2008 and was immediately contracted to Warren, will also feature. Saunders found fights hard to come by last year due to continuous hand injuries but returned to the ring earlier in the month and overwhelmed Turgay Uzun. Saunders’ opponent is yet to be determined but considering his talent and ambitions, Warren is keen to step Saunders up a level in order for him to achieve a domestic title shot by the year’s end.

“I’m obviously very excited about the top of the bill [Braehmer (36-2-0, 29ko) and Cleverly (21-0-0, 10ko)] and indeed DeGale (10-0-0, 8ko) versus Groves (12-0-0, 9ko), but the undercard is pretty special as well. You’ve got three guys in Smith, Sexton and Cook who are all coming back, and they are all going to answer some serious questions about their futures on May 21.”

[...] Warren, too, when preparing an event for pay-per-view, stacks undercards full of talent to supplement the headlining fight. One needs to look no further than his May 21 ‘This Is It’ card to see a clutch of highly acclaimed former amateurs (Saunders, Gavin), a flock of current ex British titlists (Young Mutley, Sam Sexton, Paul Smith) and an eagerly-awaited domestic fight (DeGale, Groves) introduce a world title fight (Nathan Cleverly, Juergen Braehmer). [...] It is not the first time Warren has lost out to a huge purse bid only for the fight to disappear temporarily. The British and Commonwealth unification title fight between long-time rivals George Groves and James DeGale was initially bought by Hayemaker’s head of boxing Dave Coldwell for a staggering £400,000. Hayemaker, though, failed to satisfy BBBoC criteria in time and so the fight instead will be part of a Warren show (This Is It, May 21). [...]
