“This is one of the best shows I’ve ever been involved in,” an excited Warren said on his official website.
“The card has got loads of stories and some real depth and is exactly what a PPV event should be. We’ve got eight champions, or former, champions in action as well as some youngsters who are going to be knocking on the door for titles in the near future.”
The main support for the two headlining fights come from Britain’s sole gold medalist at the World Amateur Championships (2007 in Chicago), Frankie Gavin (9-0-0, 8ko), who has a style reminiscent of Britain’s only undefeated world champion Joe Calzaghe. Gavin, for the first time in his career, is scheduled in a 12 round contest against Young Mutley (22-2-0, 12ko) – a former British welterweight belt holder.
Billy Joe Saunders who, along with Gavin and DeGale, turned professional in 2008 and was immediately contracted to Warren, will also feature. Saunders found fights hard to come by last year due to continuous hand injuries but returned to the ring earlier in the month and overwhelmed Turgay Uzun. Saunders’ opponent is yet to be determined but considering his talent and ambitions, Warren is keen to step Saunders up a level in order for him to achieve a domestic title shot by the year’s end.
“I’m obviously very excited about the top of the bill [Braehmer (36-2-0, 29ko) and Cleverly (21-0-0, 10ko)] and indeed DeGale (10-0-0, 8ko) versus Groves (12-0-0, 9ko), but the undercard is pretty special as well. You’ve got three guys in Smith, Sexton and Cook who are all coming back, and they are all going to answer some serious questions about their futures on May 21.”
