Lightweight gatekeeper Ameth Diaz produced a viscious performance against pre-fight favourite Lenny Zappavigna at the Melbourne Pavilion, Flemington, Victoria in Australia on Friday, August 5 in a title eliminator for the IBF championship, currently held by Miguel Vazquez. A big-puncher, Diaz was able to stop Lenny Z within five rounds.

Zappavigna, who dropped to 25-2-0, 17ko with defeat, had been in with Vazquez earlier in the year, losing a 12-round decision in March when he challenged for the championship title at 135lbs on the undercard for Ricardo Mayorga and Miguel Cotto’s title fight at super welterweight in Las Vegas.
A heavy-handed Panamanian, Diaz’s surprise win upped his record to 30-10-0, 21ko, and he will now be made mandatory challenger to Vazquez’s IBF crown. Diaz dropped Zappa in the second round and continued to fight aggressively until the Australian’s corner stopped the contest in the fifth.
