Diego Magdaleno emerged triumphant against Alejandro Perez at Las Vegas’ Texas Station Casino on Friday, July 15 and On The Beak‘s Stacey Verbeek was ringside to capture the action. The two super featherweights were the headline attraction at the Top Rank promoted event that was featured on Showtime’s successful Showbox: The Next Generation programme.
Shobox has proven to be the launchpad for the career of a plethora of pugilists. The premise of the programme simple: to showcase the sport’s up-and-comers and the fact it has produced 43 major title holders in a decade only heightens it’s attraction.
Diego Magdaleno will have bolstered his own world ranking and chances of a world title shot as he dominated Alejandro Perez. Magdaleno, a resident of Las Vegas, showed great heart and pluck by getting off the canvas in the opening round to win a one-sided points verdict.
Perez’s best punch was the straight right – the punch that dropped Diego in the opening stanza, but in every subsequent round, Magdaleno exerted his authority with the jab and came out best whether he would box around his opponent, or pressure him.
Magdaleno may still lag behind Adrian Broner in the domestic rankings due to Broner’s incredible knockout ratio but on the world scene he will be able to command a match-up against a contender. Should he be successful then he may add to Shobox‘s already incredible statistic.
